What is Grief?

Most people think that grief is only the deep sorrow that we experience after someone or something that we love has passed away – that is a misconception. Grief is also the deep sorrow that we can experience after a major life change or at the end of a familiar life pattern. Here are some of the many examples of events that could cause us to experience the feelings associated with grief:

  • Death of a loved one
  • Death of a friend or colleague
  • Death of a pet
  • Loss of a job
  • Divorce
  • Loss of a friendship
  • End of a relationship
  • Change in financial status
  • Infidelity
  • Abuse
  • Abandonment
  • Experience a major illness
  • Loss of a personal dream
  • Catastrophic event

As you can see, there are an array of experiences that can elicit the feelings associated with grief and there may be times when you may not understand those feelings or how to cope with them. During those times it is best to educate yourself about grief and grieving. If you compare what your feeling to other areas of life when you didn’t understand something, you will see that it became easier once you learned about it. If you know how to maneuver through grief in a healthy way, it allows you to experience resilience sooner which will bring about feelings of joy rather than sorrow.

Grief experts agree that we are all born knowing what is best for us and how to grieve, but that at different stages of our lives our subconscious minds learn differently and we are no longer able to recognize the information we were born with. The good news is that you can overcome this and learn how to consciously observe unwanted thoughts so that you can replace them with constructive, positive thoughts and begin to experience joy again!
